The "Cold Water Army" was a  temperance organization in the United States, founded in 1839 by Rev. T. P. Hunt as part of the American Temperance Society. "Joining the Cold Water Army" was also a popular term for signing a pledge of total abstinence from alcohol and, more generally, for all the numerous temperance groups that encouraged drinking only water as a substitute.
