FAQ | Civilwarbuttons.com

What is CivilWarButtons.com?

CivilWarButtons.com is a specialized dealer and educational resource focused on authentic Civil War era buttons and related military artifacts (including those from earlier times in American history). We buy, sell, identify, and help authenticate original buttons from the Union and Confederate armies, as well as state militia, staff, and specialty units. Our work is centered on historical accuracy, transparency, helping collectors, and preserving original artifacts.

Are the buttons on CivilWarButtons.com authentic originals?

Yes. Every button offered for sale is an original Civil War–era artifact unless it is clearly labeled otherwise. We carefully examine construction, backmarks, manufacturing methods, metal composition, and known period characteristics before listing any item. Authenticity is the foundation of our business, and we do not mix reproductions with original inventory.

How do you authenticate Civil War buttons?

Authentication is based on a combination of hands-on examination and historical reference. We analyze the button’s backmark, shank style, die strike, metal type, and wear patterns, then compare those details against known manufacturers and documented examples from the 1850s–1860s. When appropriate, we also consider provenance and excavation context. This multi-step approach helps ensure accuracy and consistency.

Can you identify a Civil War button I already own?

Yes. We offer identification assistance for collectors, historians, and families who own Civil War buttons and want to know what they have. Clear photos of the front and backmark are usually sufficient to provide an informed identification.  When possible, we explain the unit type, approximate date of manufacture, and historical background tied to the button. Please do know that this is schedule dependent, and such detail is not always available or practical.   If you are providing photographs of multiple buttons, please line them up and photograph the fronts and backs in the same order (being careful to preserve that order as you turn them over), so we can correctly associate the proper designs with their respective backmarks. .  It can also be helpful to number each of the buttons.

Do you buy Civil War buttons and collections?

We do. CivilWarButtons.com actively purchases individual buttons, small groups, and complete collections. We are especially interested in original Union and Confederate examples, rare state seals, odd backmarks, and unusual variations. If you are selling, you can expect straightforward communications and a timely response.

How does the selling process work?

The process starts by contacting us with photos and basic details of what you have. After an initial review, we may ask additional questions or request to examine the items more closely. Once an evaluation is complete and price is accepted, payment is handled promptly and securely.

Do you work with relic hunters and detectorists?

Yes. We regularly work with relic hunters and metal detectorists who recover Civil War buttons in the field. We understand the importance of accurate identification, proper handling, and historical context. Dug buttons are evaluated with attention to soil wear, patina, and structural integrity, not just appearance.

What types of Civil War buttons do you specialize in?

Our focus includes Confederate and Union service buttons, state seal buttons, militia buttons of all sorts, Military Schools and Academies, and specialty roles such as artillery, cavalry, infantry, naval, staff officers. We also handle rare foreign-manufactured Confederate imports and lesser-known variations that are often misidentified elsewhere.

Do you deal in other military buttons?

Yes. We buy, sell, and actively collect American Revolutionary War and War of 1812 buttons, as well.

Are prices based on condition or rarity?

Both. Pricing reflects a combination of rarity, historical demand, condition, and overall eye appeal. Factors such as intact shanks, legible backmarks, and original surface patina all influence value. Rare buttons with honest wear often command strong prices due to scarcity, even if they are not cosmetically perfect. Some buttons have greater value in unexcavated condition while other sorts are more desirable as dug specimens.

Do you provide historical background with your items?

Yes. Whenever possible, listings and identifications include historical context about the button’s use, manufacturer, and the type of unit or role it represents. We believe understanding the story behind an artifact is just as important as being able to add the object to your collection.

How long does identification or evaluation usually take?

Simple identifications can often be completed within a few days once clear photos are received. Larger collections or more complex evaluations may take additional time, especially when research is required. We communicate timelines upfront so you know what to expect.

Do you offer appraisals for insurance or estate purposes?

We can provide informed value opinions as a paid service based on current collector markets, rarity, and condition. While we are not a mass appraisal service, our niche expertise in Civil War buttons makes our evaluations particularly useful for collectors, estates, and serious historical holdings.

Can beginners shop with CivilWarButtons.com, or is this only for advanced collectors?

We work with everyone—from first-time finders and the simply curious to advanced collectors. Questions are always welcome, and we take the time to explain what details matter and why. Educating collectors helps protect the hobby and preserve authentic history. Working with folks as they explore and learn about Civil War button collecting is one of our greatest rewards.

Why should I shop with CivilWarButtons.com instead of a general antique dealer?

CivilWarButtons.com focuses exclusively on this niche. That specialization means deeper knowledge, more accurate identification, fairer pricing, and fewer mistakes. General antique dealers often misidentify or overvalue/undervalue  Civil War buttons due to their complexity and subtle variations.

Does CivilWarButtons.com sell on Lay-a-way plans?

Yes.  If you see something that you want to add to your collection and paying for it over a period of weeks or months works better for your collecting, we are happy to offer this as an interest free service.  Because items are reserved and removed from inventory, all such sales are final and non-refundable. This policy is not a penalty but simply preserves the honor of a courtesy arrangement.

How long is the  Lay-a-way period?

It Depends… Think about your financial situation and simply tell me what timeline you would need to complete payment and add a pay schedule/or two for insulation (it is better to be able to finish early than late).  If I can make it work, I will.  This arrangement is based on trust and is meant to help all parties, so please pick a payment schedule that is both doable and doesn't hurt either of us.

If I want to set something aside before I receive my tax refund, how would this work?

Reach out by email and let me know what you would like to place on hold and what you can send as a deposit (five percent or a number otherwise proposed and agreed upon by email or phone, such as $50) and send the deposit by mail or Zelle. The items will be placed on hold and set them aside for you.
