23mm, Civil War era New York Staff Officer, with "W. H. Smith & Co/New York" backmark.  This is a rare, dug Northern button and you seldom see them found.  There is a little push lightly effecting the lower shield and top of the eagle's tail.  Lots of gilt and a scarce backmark variation for this design.
